Patty and The Buttons, The Cactus Blossoms to combine powers and become “THE CACTUS BUTTONS” ONE NIGHT ONLY at The Dakota Jazz Club, September 15

cactus blossoms vita.mn
We’re very excited to be presenting a show at the Dakota with our buddies The Cactus Blossoms! Both bands will do some playing on their own, then come together at the end of the night for a set as “THE CACTUS BUTTONS”. We can’t in good conscience guarantee that this will happen again, so if you want to see it, y’all better come… For those buttons fans who aren’t acquainted, The Cactus Blossoms are an outfit lead by brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey. Known for their tight vocal harmonies, they perform original and traditional material in the style of early Country and Western Swing. Many Western Swing band leaders used to have clarinets and accordions in their bands alongside fiddles and steel guitars. There is also quite an established tradition of New Orleans musicians adding their musicianship and repertoire to what folks like Bob Wills and Milton Brown were doing back in the 1930’s. It seems like a natural to have Patty and The Buttons and The Cactus Blossoms form a hillbilly orchestra the likes of which the upper midwest hasn’t seen for many years!

Special performance at The Dakota Jazz Club featuring New Orleans piano master Tom McDermott Thursday, August 22nd

Tom McDermott

Pianist Tom McDermott

Tom McDermott is a good friend of ours from my time living and playing in New Orleans.  He is a virtuoso jazz pianist versed in the styles of Jelly Roll Morton, Professor Longhair, James P. Johnson and many others.  In addition, he is a talented composer in a wide variety of Idioms. Tom is also a regular guest on HBO’s series “Treme”  We are THRILLED to be presenting a show at the Dakota with him on Thursday, August 22nd.  Tom will be doing some solo playing as well as joining the band for a set of Traditional Jazz.  Showtime is 7pm, You DON’T want to miss it!

Here are some nice things noted publications have had to say about him:

“Mr. McDermott is not simply a follower of tradition or a repository of old tunes. He composes within his wide-ranging idiom with a knowledgeable feeling for his sources and a sense of humor.” -John S. Wilson, New York Times

“To single out one New Orleans jazz musician for being talented and likeable is absurd. But, not long after moving here, Margaret and I were at a night club with friends when Tom McDermott, a thin, sandy-haired man, shuffled up to our table…A few minutes later, McDermott took the stage, sat down at the piano, and set it on fire. He can do anything. We’ve heard him play ragtime, ‘trad jazz,’ swing, choros from Brazil, musettes from France, and any number of other genres. He doesn’t just play tunes, either. He writes his own. How many other American musicians are writing musettes, for heaven’s sake?…We have all of Tom’s CDs, so when we’re shuffling our iPod through our stereo, it seems that every third song is being played by Tom McDermott. That’s fine with us.” -Dan Baum, New Yorker.com, May 23

Our good buddies The Cactus Blossoms are out of town again and have graciously asked us to keep their Monday night scene going. Patty and The Buttons especially love playing the Turf Club as it has historically been a jazz/dance club dating all the way back to the 40’s. As per EVERY MONDAY night, there is a sizeable dancefloor as well as the talented Daniel behind the bar! We will be making the evening extra special by adding our good friend Rick Carlson (piano) to the normal quartet. It’s gonna be good!

Debut at Dakota Jazz Club April 10th

BlackonBlue-300x300

We’re happy to tell you that we will be making our debut at the Dakota Jazz Club on April 10th, 2013!! If you’re a fan of the band, please come support us at Minnesota’s premiere jazz club. We will be playing on “Foodie night” where there is NO COVER, $10 bottles of wine and a $30 dollar tasting menu. If that’s not enough to entice you, we will also have our good friend Mr. Rick Carlson joining us on piano! There isn’t an official dance floor, but, if your feet were to start moving in a rhythmic fashion while in an upright position, I don’t think anyone would tell you to stop. 7-10:30pm
